1. ξεραίνω, μαραίνω, κάνω κάτι να ζαρώσει («ἠέλιος χρόα κάρφει», Ησίοδ.)
2. ταπεινώνω κάποιον («σκολιὸν καὶ ἀγήνορα κάρφει Ζεὺς», Ησίοδ.).
[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Η λ. σχηματίζεται με τη συνεσταλμένη βαθμίδα (s)krb(h)- τής ΙΕ ρίζας* (s)kerb(h)- «κάμπτω, καμπουριάζω, ζαρώνω» — οι προτεινόμενες συνδέσεις με συγγενείς γλώσσες (λατ. corbis «καλάθι», ρωσ. korobitb «καμπουριάζω, κυρτώνω», άνω γερμ. schrumpfen «καμπουριάζω», scharpe «ταινία», γαλλ. echarpe «ταινία», αγγλ. shrimp «ανθρωπάκος», scarf «μαντίλι») δεν είναι ικανοποιητικές ούτε μορφολογικά ούτε σημασιολογικά.
